Watch Us, Today Recording “Long Since Forgotten”

In the beginning of November, we brought you one of our most highly anticipated releases of the year – a split between jazz-rockers Lovely Socialite and Us, Today. You can stream that split here, or purchase the (very limited run) tape here. Today, we’re happy to share with you the above video, which shows Us, Today recording “Long Since Forgotten,” which appears on their side of the split.

The recording session, which serves as the band’s official music video, was produced by Dominic Marino with editing by Mac Clenney. Us, Today was filmed and recorded at Grayscale Cincinnati.

As an added bonus, you can watch the band performing the second piece on their side of the split “Violent Proclivity” in a separate session here. And here’s a video of Lovely Socialite performing their elementary hit, Brachiosaurus Boogie (For Kids)….

Mine All Mine is excited to bring together two of our absolute favorite jazz rock outfits for this exclusive cassette split (+ digital download).

Us, Today (CINCINNATI) and Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps (MADISON) both create original tunes that are equally experimental and accessible at the same time, something few acts can successfully pull off. This is no surprise, however, knowing the bands’ considerable combined years of music education. The bottom line is that both groups know what they are doing, and they do it well.

Us, Today (guitar, drums, vibes) start out with Long Since Forgotten, a tune that starts out rather laid back, but grows steadily with determined bursts over its 6-minute duration. What follows is Violent Proclivity, which features subtle, subdued vibes and guitar that really highlight some intense drum work.

Lovely Socialite (bass, trombone, cellos, pipa, vibes, drums, flute) fill their side with the 11+ minute track All Things At Once. Recorded during tracking of the band’s upcoming sophomore album, All Things At Once is a free improvisation that sees the band taking off with out-there rock grooves.

Purchase of this cassette split includes download of two exclusive remixes of the split by Nude Human (Pat Reinholz of Lovely Socialite & John Praw of Pushmi-Pullyu).

The Lost City Music Festival 2013 starts tonight, 8/8 at 8:00 PM at the High Noon Saloon. mam242 – bell monks vs s.k.pierce – A Better Light (CD & Digital)

The newest EP from Wisconsin slow-rockers bell monks, A Better Light, features the band opposite Madison’s multi-talented Shawn Kenneth Pierce (Dharmonic Deluxe, Pioneer). This 5-track EP stands in contrast to last year’s double-disc opus, Let the Waves Carry Us. The CD version of A Better Light will cost just $3, and all proceeds from sales of the album (digital or CD) will be donated to the Fort Atkinson Arts Council. [Stream Here]

Softly, Dear has a very ‘Wisconsin’ sound. Portico is the debut effort from this Eau Claire-based band, who formed late summer 2012. After brewing for a while, it’s ready to breathe. Softly, Dear is made up of Tyler Hart, Josh Frederick, Alex Adkinson, Ben Possi and Addie Strei. Nude Human is the ambient duo of prolific experimenters John Praw and Pat Reinholz. Founded in 2012, the band has focused on creating live soundscapes, most frequently choosing to perform in 4.0 surround sound. Blind? is made up of a live recording on August 1st, 2012 for the first Lost City Music Festival. This limited edition CD is released exclusively at the Lost City Music Festival 2013, as Nude Human prepares to record their debut full-length album. [Stream Here]

After the successful Kickstarter-funded release of Registers Her Delight, Madison’s heavy hitting jazz rock ensemble Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps scattered to the wind. Now living in multiple cities, the band has found the means to return to record their new, as-of-yet-untitled full-length album. Mixing modern jazz with unique instrumentation (vibraphone, cello, bass, drums, trombone and Chinese instruments), Star-Spangled is the first single off the band’s new album. Recorded just a month ago, the single includes Lovely Socialite’s take on the Star-Spangled Banner, as well as an extended improvisation. NEW RELEASE: Lost City Music Festival 2013 Compilation

After the July 2nd launch of Pushmi-Pullyu’s Never Love A Stranger, William Z. Villain continues a very busy month of releases for Mine All Mine. The debut, self-titled EP by one of Madison’s most skilled / clinically insane rock bands will come out both digitally and as a CD + poster combo with art by Terrence Adeyanju. Though the band’s cast has rotated to include almost a dozen different members, the William Z. Villain EP credits include Bill Villain himself on vocals, resonator guitar, squeals, etc; and Ramon Gooden on percussion, mincing, sword-sharpening, etc. The EP will be released tomorrow, July 5th with a release show at Bright Red Studios, featuring Dharmonic Deluxe and Dog Hotel.

mam238 – Watercourse Quartet – Moonish Lodestar

The men of Watercourse Quartet have been creating avant-garde and improvisational music in the Madison scene for several years now. As a group consists of Ben Willis, Pat Reinholz, Brian Grimm and AJ Grimm – musicians with formal training on double bass, cello, guiqin, classical guitar and more. Individually, these guys are the driving force behind Madison experimental staples Lovely Socialite, Weather Duo, Brothers Grimm, Nude Human, Glacier and more. Moonish Lodestar is the first full-length album from Watercourse Quartet. The album will be released Sunday, July 7th with a release show at Dobrá Tea, featuring New York trio yoUToo. Mine All Mine is releasing Moonish Lodestar both digitally and on cassette tape. Watercourse Quartet is also self-releasing the album as a CD + poster combo with art by Justin Richardson.

Myles Coyne & The Rusty Nickel Band make raucous, rambunctious folk rock in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Myles has been a close partner and friend with all the folks in Mine All Mine. Myles spent some time in Pushmi-Pullyu, and after moving to Milwaukee, he helped start the Bread King Collective, which eventually led to the creation of BREADFEST. Take Things As They Come is the long-awaited debut for the Rusty Nickel Band, and will be out August 1st on vinyl and CD via Top Five Records. Mine All Mine will be handling download codes for the vinyl, as well as the digital release of the album. Take Things As They Come will be available with a release show at Linneman’s in Milwaukee, featuring Calliope and Faux Fir. Mine All Mine will also be releasing a special bonus EP that will be included with the vinyl (mam240).

mam241 – Softly, Dear – Portico

Not too long ago, we announced the new signing of Eau Claire band Softly, Dear. Last month, the band – consisting of Tyler Hart, Josh Frederick, Alex Adkinson, Ben Possi and Addie Strei – self-released their debut Portico on limited-edition CD and digital download. Mine All Mine Records will be re-releasing the EP (plus bonus material) on limited-edition cassette tape and download with a release show August 8th at the High Noon Saloon (details TBA). Portico has been described as bouncing “back and forth between its borderline melancholy lyrical content and sunny, laid back grooves” and “the perfect soundtrack for a summer season just beginning” (Leader-Telegram, June 19th).

UPDATE: Lovely Socialite Returns, and More!

After nearly a year of inactivity, one of my all-time favorite Madison bands is back in action! Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps is the only band in the area that tackles jazz-rock the way they do. After parting ways for a while due to school and work, Lovely Socialite has announced that they are convening once again to record new material and play a handful of one-off shows.

Last year’s successful Kickstarter helped the band release Registers Her Delight, Lovely Socialite’s first full-length album. But anyone who saw the band in the time between that album’s release and their hiatus will know that there were plenty of tunes left undocumented.

I’m always down for forward-thinking music, and I’m happy to say Lovely Socialite will be doing exactly that with their new, as-of-yet-untitled EP. In addition to this EP, Lovely Socialite will be recording a new (also as-of-yet-untitled) split cassette with the similarly-awesome Cincinnati band Us, Today.

Catch Lovely Socialite in their special return shows July 4th at the Frequency in Madison, and July 5th at the Yield Bar in Milwaukee, and stay tuned for more information on the band’s upcoming releases.

New Video & Single: Dressed Up

Dressed Up is the new solo side-project of Pushmi-Pullyu’s John Praw. He creates crunchy lo-fi sounds within a digital environment. This single marks the first official release by the project and features a remix by Brain Grimmer (of Lovely Socialite, Brothers Grimm), as well as a B-side titled Nobody But Batman.
