“The Shape of Imagination” is a new short by Anu Jayanth & Raquel Salazar. The film features characters, props, animation and more from the duo, and focuses on the purity and imagination of children. “The Shape of Imagination” also features music by Nude Human (John Praw & Pat Reinholz).

You may recognize Raquel Salazar‘s previous work with Mine All Mine, including this excellent interview with Mark Roberts (Stars & Letters) and the official music video for Black Fog by John Praw.

Nude Human is the collaborative ambient duo of Madison resident John Praw (of Pushmi-Pullyu, Dressed Up, etc) and Milwaukee dweller Pat Reinholz (of Weather Duo, Lovely Socialite, Lady Cannon, etc). Founded in mid-2012, Nude Human is an equal partnership that sees Praw and Reinholz bringing together ideas and techniques from vastly differing backgrounds to create lush, shifting compositions.

Is Is Is Not Is Not is the duo’s third major composition, and the second to be released in live session format (following the release of 2012’s live Lost City Music Festival set earlier this year). Alternately titled Zanarkand, Is Is Is Not Is Not was recorded live at the Frequency (121 W. Main Street, Madison, WI) on November 17th, 2013. It is now released for free download on John Praw’s birthday.

Mine All Mine is excited to bring together two of our absolute favorite jazz rock outfits for this exclusive cassette split (+ digital download).

Us, Today (CINCINNATI) and Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps (MADISON) both create original tunes that are equally experimental and accessible at the same time, something few acts can successfully pull off. This is no surprise, however, knowing the bands’ considerable combined years of music education. The bottom line is that both groups know what they are doing, and they do it well.

Us, Today (guitar, drums, vibes) start out with Long Since Forgotten, a tune that starts out rather laid back, but grows steadily with determined bursts over its 6-minute duration. What follows is Violent Proclivity, which features subtle, subdued vibes and guitar that really highlight some intense drum work.

Lovely Socialite (bass, trombone, cellos, pipa, vibes, drums, flute) fill their side with the 11+ minute track All Things At Once. Recorded during tracking of the band’s upcoming sophomore album, All Things At Once is a free improvisation that sees the band taking off with out-there rock grooves.

mam242 – bell monks vs s.k.pierce – A Better Light (CD & Digital)

The newest EP from Wisconsin slow-rockers bell monks, A Better Light, features the band opposite Madison’s multi-talented Shawn Kenneth Pierce (Dharmonic Deluxe, Pioneer). This 5-track EP stands in contrast to last year’s double-disc opus, Let the Waves Carry Us. The CD version of A Better Light will cost just $3, and all proceeds from sales of the album (digital or CD) will be donated to the Fort Atkinson Arts Council. [Stream Here]

Softly, Dear has a very ‘Wisconsin’ sound. Portico is the debut effort from this Eau Claire-based band, who formed late summer 2012. After brewing for a while, it’s ready to breathe. Nude Human is the ambient duo of prolific experimenters John Praw and Pat Reinholz. Founded in 2012, the band has focused on creating live soundscapes, most frequently choosing to perform in 4.0 surround sound. Blind? is made up of a live recording on August 1st, 2012 for the first Lost City Music Festival. After the successful Kickstarter-funded release of Registers Her Delight, Madison’s heavy hitting jazz rock ensemble Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps scattered to the wind. Now living in multiple cities, the band has found the means to return to record their new, as-of-yet-untitled full-length album. Mixing modern jazz with unique instrumentation (vibraphone, cello, bass, drums, trombone and Chinese instruments), Star-Spangled is the first single off the band’s new album. Recorded just a month ago, the single includes Lovely Socialite’s take on the Star-Spangled Banner, as well as an extended improvisation. After the July 2nd launch of Pushmi-Pullyu’s Never Love A Stranger, William Z. Villain continues a very busy month of releases for Mine All Mine. The debut, self-titled EP by one of Madison’s most skilled / clinically insane rock bands will come out both digitally and as a CD + poster combo with art by Terrence Adeyanju. Though the band’s cast has rotated to include almost a dozen different members, the William Z. Villain EP credits include Bill Villain himself on vocals, resonator guitar, squeals, etc; and Ramon Gooden on percussion, mincing, sword-sharpening, etc. The EP will be released tomorrow, July 5th with a release show at Bright Red Studios, featuring Dharmonic Deluxe and Dog Hotel.

mam238 – Watercourse Quartet – Moonish Lodestar

The men of Watercourse Quartet have been creating avant-garde and improvisational music in the Madison scene for several years now. As a group consists of Ben Willis, Pat Reinholz, Brian Grimm and AJ Grimm – musicians with formal training on double bass, cello, guiqin, classical guitar and more. Individually, these guys are the driving force behind Madison experimental staples Lovely Socialite, Weather Duo, Brothers Grimm, Nude Human, Glacier and more. Moonish Lodestar is the first full-length album from Watercourse Quartet. The album will be released Sunday, July 7th with a release show at Dobrá Tea, featuring New York trio yoUToo. Mine All Mine is releasing Moonish Lodestar both digitally and on cassette tape. Watercourse Quartet is also self-releasing the album as a CD + poster combo with art by Justin Richardson.

Myles Coyne & The Rusty Nickel Band make raucous, rambunctious folk rock in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Myles has been a close partner and friend with all the folks in Mine All Mine. Myles spent some time in Pushmi-Pullyu, and after moving to Milwaukee, he helped start the Bread King Collective, which eventually led to the creation of BREADFEST. Take Things As They Come is the long-awaited debut for the Rusty Nickel Band, and will be out August 1st on vinyl and CD via Top Five Records. Mine All Mine will be handling download codes for the vinyl, as well as the digital release of the album. Take Things As They Come will be available with a release show at Linneman’s in Milwaukee, featuring Calliope and Faux Fir. Mine All Mine will also be releasing a special bonus EP that will be included with the vinyl (mam240).

Not too long ago, we announced the new signing of Eau Claire band Softly, Dear. Last month, the band – consisting of Tyler Hart, Josh Frederick, Alex Adkinson, Ben Possi and Addie Strei – self-released their debut Portico on limited-edition CD and digital download. Mine All Mine Records will be re-releasing the EP (plus bonus material) on limited-edition cassette tape and download with a release show August 8th at the High Noon Saloon (details TBA). Portico has been described as bouncing “back and forth between its borderline melancholy lyrical content and sunny, laid back grooves” and “the perfect soundtrack for a summer season just beginning” (Leader-Telegram, June 19th).

Mine All Mine and GrimmusiK present COLIAS 1, the first in a new series of ambient releases that started with a simple prompt: “What does ambient music mean to you? The result is a compilation of heard and unheard material from the minds of Madison’s most prolific experimenters (with regional and national guests).

COLIAS 1 features new music from John Praw, Brain Grimmer, Silas “Be” Ritchie (featuring Brian Tairaku Ritchie), Troy Schafer, DB Pedersen, Wayfaraway (Karsten Osterby of Sleepy Lesbos), Kathleen Baird (of Spires That in the Sunset Rise), Gregory Taylor, Ben Willis and more.

Of particular interest is the number of musicians releasing their first ambient compositions on the compilation. COLIAS 1 features tracks from new comers like Corey Murphy (of Pushmi-Pullyu and Lovely Socialite), William Z. Villain, Asumaya, and others. Also included are ambient pieces by hip-hop producer *hitmayng and experimental pop musician eskimeaux.

The compilation is being produced as a collaboration between Mine All Mine Records and GrimmusiK, and will be released as a limited edition two disc physical release. Packaging design and album art is being provided by John Praw of Mine All Mine with help from Brian Grimm of GrimmusiK (see album art below).

The release party will feature Madison locals Nude Human (John Praw + Pat Reinholz), Brothers Grimm with DB Pedersen, and special guests CJ Boyd (represented on the compilation as part of Kurva Choir) and long-time Mine All Mine collaborator eskimeaux. The show will be held at Bright Red Studios on 9 Ingersoll Street, Madison, WI.

New Release: Weather Duo & Jaap Blonk – live at Audio for the Arts

On March 17th, 2012, Pat and Ben of Weather Duo met experimental sound poet Jaap Blonk for the first time. Shortly after that, the three recorded the completely improvised live set offered here today. Recorded live and mixed by Steve Gotcher at Audio for the Arts, Madison, WI. The Performance was presented by Surrounded by Reality.
