Pushmi-Pullyu Turns FIVE! (Free Download)

Pushmi-Pullyu

I can’t believe it!  This little project I started to play a random show has now been around for half a decade.  Pushmi-Pullyu is now five years old.  It started with me, a midi controller, and a basement full of drunk college kids.  That night, Corey Murphy joined me for a keyboard solo, and he soon became my right-hand man.  After being a duo for quite some time, Myles Coyne joined us for a bit.  Since then, others have come and gone, each imparting some part of their personality.  Together, through all the permutations, Pushmi-Pullyu has played SIXTY shows!  Not bad for never touring.

Pushmi-Pullyu - Never Love A StrangerThe last year and a half has been completely taken up with Never Love A Stranger, the first proper full-length release of our material.  There have been other releases, of course – a mostly-solo collection of rough cuts to hold people over while I lived in Norway; a split with Mark Roberts (aka The Enright House, now known as We Are Temporary); a few singles and compilation appearances.  Now, we’re get ready to move forward with the band and our new lineup: Corey Murphy, Luke Annear, Sam Ludwig, Jamie Yanda and me, John Praw Kruse.

According to the National Network for Child Care,

“Five-year-olds are cheerful, energetic, and enthusiastic. They enjoy planning, and spend a great deal of time discussing who will do what. They especially enjoy dramatic play, usually with other children. Five-year-olds are more sensitive to the needs and feelings of others around them. It is less difficult for them to wait for a turn or to share toys and material.”

Going by that description, it’s time for us to share our toys and material.  For the next week, Never Love A Stranger is completely free!  We hope you enjoy it, and we hope you stick around for the next five years.  On a personal note, I want to thank everyone who has ever supported the band by buying merch, coming to a show, or leaving a nice comment.  It means a lot!

INTERVIEW: John Praw of Pushmi-Pullyu on the Murfie Podcast

Pushmi-Pullyu Interview

Pushmi-Pullyu @ Memorial Union Terrace, 2012.

Pushmi-Pullyu founding member John Praw recently sat down with Kayla to discuss music marketing strategies, online streaming music, and – most importantly – their upcoming album Never Love A Stranger.  After a successful week streaming via a Madison Arts Extract album preview, Never Love A Stranger is due for release next week.

As a special treat, the album is available a week early, exclusively via Murfie.com.  Once you’ve purchased your copy on Murfie, you can stream, download or request the physical disc.  Murfie has given a number of Mine All Mine artists coverage on their blog, and they were the primary sponsor of last year’s Lost City Music Festival.  For that reason, we’re incredibly happy and grateful to partner with them again!

NOW STREAMING: Pushmi-Pullyu – Never Love A Stranger

Pushmi-Pullyu - Never Love A Stranger

We’re happy to announce that Pushmi-Pullyu’s upcoming album, Never Love A Stranger, is now streaming for a limited time on Madison’s own Arts Extract.  Until the release on July 2nd, you can stream Never Love A Stranger in its entirety here.

Here’s what Arts Extract’s Scott Gordon had to say about the album:

Madison’s Pushmi-Pullyu has evolved over the years from a sparse electronic-pop solo project to a full-band vehicle for John Kruse’s wandering, frequently morose songs. The five-piece comprises Kruse on keyboards, glockenspiel and vocals; Corey Murphy on keyboards; Luke Annear on drums; Tom Teslik on guitar; and Sam Ludwig on saxophone. Stream the band’s first album, Never Love A Stranger, for free in its entirety until its release on July 2. The album is available through Mine All Mine Records, and the band will celebrate with a July 24 show at the Memorial Union Terrace.

Check it out while you can, and thanks to Arts Extract for the feature!

Record Store Day 2013

Record Store Day Haul 2013

I normally don’t do much blog-type writing here on the Mine All Mine site.  I try to keep it all business and promo, but we’re big fans of Record Store Day over here.  Earlier today, Tom Teslik released his new single at a special busking set outside MadCity Music Exchange, and I personally spent way too much money on music.  I’ve shared my haul below, and I’d love to hear what you walked away with.  Let me know in the comments!

Pushmi-Pullyu Releases New Single

Pushmi-Pullyu - In The Bleak Midwinter

“In The Bleak Midwinter” is a new single from Pushmi-Pullyu’s first full-band album, Never Love A Stranger. Originally arranged for a live performance on WYOU, “In The Bleak Midwinter” is the band’s take on a classic carol with words by the English poet Christina Rossetti (circa 1872).

Never Love A Stranger documents Pushmi-Pullyu’s shift from electronic ambient pop to completely instrumented textural rock.

Recorded at House Arrest studios in Madison, WI by Brian Nolan (of American Hi-Fi). Cover photo by Nikki Gibson. Cover design by John Praw.
