Stars & Letters: Year One

Stars & Letters

On February 1st of this year, our very good friend, Mark Roberts (of We Are Temporary // The Enright House) started up his own label.  Stars & Letters is a “small Brooklyn record label, dedicated to releasing great music by emerging artists.”  And it’s good – really good.  Mark and his tight roster of artists put out chill, dreamy electronics with pop/wave influences.

To celebrate the end of their first year (well, almost a year), Stars & Letters are offering their current catalog of releases completely FREE until the end of the year.  To stream or download these great releases, visit their bandcamp page here.

Check out these awesome release for free while you can.  I’ll also embed them below for your convenience.

Catch Madison Composer Brain Grimmer Live for the First Time

$5, 21+ | 8:30 PM
Monday, November 19th [Event]
The Frequency | 121 W. Main St.

Things may have been quiet over here at Mine All Mine, but trust me, we’ve been working on stuff.  One of our key focus areas in the last several months has been promoting local music here in Madison, Wisconsin.  Last summer, we hosted the first ever Lost City Music Festival, and since then, we’ve been stoked to see the community continue to grow, including new-found support from the mayor of Madison (but more on that later).

For now, we’d like to point your attention toward an exciting upcoming show at the Frequency on Monday, November 19th.  For the first time, Madison composer Brian Grimm (of Lovely Socialite, Brothers Grimm, Watercourse Quartet) will be performing his electronic beat-based pieces under the Brain Grimmer monicker.  With this project, he’ll be presenting an absolutely unique combination of cello, guzheng (an ancient Chinese plucked zither), and APC.  Brian Grimm is a prolific composer and electronic musician.

Joining him will be Thollem Electric: Tsigoti+, “an anarcho blues lullaby noise free jazz circus punk show of solo renditions of Tsigoti songs plus more.”  Thollem has been traveling perpetually throughout North America and Europe the past six years, collaborating with artists such as Mike Watt (Minutemen/The Stooges), Nels Cline (Wilco), John Dieterich/Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Jad Fair (Half-Japanese) and Arrington de Dionyso (Old Time Relijun).

Part II: Ben Schapiro’s 617-797-5411 Updated

For those of you who haven’t already checked out Ben Schapiro’s excellent album “617-797-5411” (stream it above or click below for more info), we’ve got another great reason to check it out.  This incredibly intimate album has recently been updated to include Part II, which adds five new songs recorded this summer since the original release of the album.  The album also updates a few earlier recordings.  Physical copies coming soon.

“617-797-5411” is an intimate glimpse into the soul and psyche of Ben Schapiro, one of Madison’s best-loved underground musicians.  Before leaving Madison for parts unknown, Ben was a staple of Madison’s house show scene, often as part of the band Dirty Jive.  The album shows Ben’s skill and craftsmanship on the acoustic guitar without ever abandoning the delicacy and honesty of his poetry.

Poll: What’s your favorite audio format?

Assuming you’ve all liked us on facebook (hint, hint), take a moment to answer our poll.  As we celebrate turning 5 years old (more on that soon), it’s interesting to see what people value in terms of how they listen to music.  If you have a few spare seconds, pick your favorite/preferred audio format, and leave a comment on why you made that decision.

Perhaps it could influence future choices here at Mine All Mine…  Find the poll here, or click that giant, obvious sign above.  For those of you who do not have facebook, feel free to answer below.

As you may know, we’ve recently begun working closely with Madison’s newest venue, the Dragonfly Lounge.  Located below the beautiful Bellini Italian Restaurant (401 E. Washington), Dragonfly has been a small space for private events since Bellini was converted from a church (built in 1897) into one of Madison’s finest Italian restaurants.  Now, the space serves as an intimate venue, and Mine All Mine has partnered with Dragonfly to fill the space.  So far, our winter series has shown that Madison is more than ready to support a new venue with friendly faces.

Read on below for videos and photos from our launch party (Pioneer, Pushmi-Pullyu, Ugly Brothers and Lovely Socialite), as well as live audio featured on WORT 89.9FM (Cap Alan, Golden Donna and Lovely Socialite).  At the end, grab some info on booking with Mine All Mine at the Dragonfly Lounge, as well as our upcoming shows (see the sidebar to the right). Celebrating 2011

The year 2011 was an important one for Mine All Mine Records.  Over the course of a year, we have released nearly 60 albums, EPs and singles, we have raised money for multiple non-profits, we have begun booking shows at the DragonFly Lounge, and much more!

To celebrate, we are setting free five releases from 2011 that were previously not available for free download.  For the next week, you can download the following five albums and EPs absolutely free!  You can still visit the download page to send some money to the artist(s), but for now, this is our gift to you.  Continue below for descriptions and download links.

Amy Hiller’s Open Call For Wintery Creatures

As always here at Mine All Mine Records, we thrive on community involvement.  We know that our artists are some of our most active listeners, and we also know that our listeners are some of the coolest people out there.  Hint.  Hint.

Now here’s the personal appeal, straight from the fingers of Amy Hiller:

I’ve got a new EP called ‘Icey’ coming out soon and for the artwork, I’d like to create a sort of collage of animals you might find in icey climates. Polar bears, penguins, those white foxes etc. They’re going to be cut out and stuck onto a background so i would literally just need the animal, in whatever pose you like.

If you think you could do this, i would be eternally grateful. You can spend as little or as long on it as you like.

Submit your wintery creature drawings in the comments below, or email them to mineallmine.records@hotmail.com.  But hurry – time is running out!

Though we’re not 100% sure on the deadline, Mine All Mine Records is upping the ante.  Anyone who submits an original drawing that fits the criteria Amy asked for by Christmas evening will get a very special prize.
